> Listen to Azote talk about the Rough ER
Azote: Oh, the rough ER is actually pretty cool! As i'm sure you can see, it's covered in ribosomes.
Azote: These ribosomes have a slight difference from those free-floating in the cytosol. The ribosomes floating around (free ribsomes) produce protiens that function in that cell. On the other hand, the ribosomes attached to the Rough ER produce protiens that function outside the cell.
Azote: I'm sure you can guess why it's important that we can produce protiens that work out of the cell they were synthesized in.
You thank Azote and are about to leave, but they call you back.
Azote: Wait that isn't ALL the rough ER does! That's just the ribosomes attached to it!
Azote: Both ERs also synthesize membranes, and compartmentalize the cell to keep the protiens made by two different types of membranes separate.
You thank Azote and leave.
Azote: Thanks for listening!
